A wise decision

No, I´m not going to Scotland this summer either, for different reasons. So I can at first dream a little of Scotland...

...and then be happy of what I´ve got at home...
...and the plans of our family vacations in Arjeplog.

No mobile connection...

June 2013: I noticed in Oslo that I had no mobile connection outside Finland. How nice it was finding an oldfashioned phonebox at Gardemoen, the airport in Oslo. And it worked!! Put some coins there, call home and hear Tore´s voice! I had forgotten that...

In Glenmore Lodge, after a few days, Tore had fixed the connection with the operator and I had my mobile back...

2.6.2013 Edinburgh, at last!

Yes, it´s true. A week ago I couldn´t imagine this, but here I am!

Thank you, Dave Fowler and Mattias  Claësson, for generously sharing your photos!

2.6.2013 Music in Edinburgh

  Bagpipes...

classical...
and these boys fascinated me by playing old music in a new - their own - way.
Or did they play new music influenced of old music??

2.6.2013 Edinburgh castle

Sir William Wallace - Braveheart - welcomes you. Maybe.

A soldier´s wife had been in winterquarter in Malplaquet, but decided to return home to Scotland. She handed her little son to his father, Private McBain, who was on parade. He fought the battle with his little son in his knapsack, having nowhere else to put him.

A mortally wounded soldier fell carrying the flag in front of the regiment at Waterloo. A sergeant tried to take it from him, but he refused to give the flag away. The sergeant took the soldier, still gripping the flag, over his shoulder. This impressed the French so much that they held fire until the two soldiers had returned from the frontline.

More peaceful:
Saint Margaret´s Chapel, the oldest building in the castle,
built by King David I (1124-53)

The fireside looks so cosy, but remindings of war were everywhere in Edinburgh Castle.

2.6.2013 By train to Aviemore

Everything was perfect when I travelled. I happened to sit next to an American science teacher! We talked and talked like old friends. About geography curriculum, schools in Finland and in the USA and then we had a glimpse of this fault line with brooms as decorations.

3.6.2013 Sunday evening: Our first evening in Glenmore Lodge

Name labels. Soon we didn´t need them any more.

I was so happy: I was going to stay in these wonderful surroundings with these people for a whole week!

3.6.2013 Monday with Robbie

..and theory linked to reality is not boring!
1. Experiental knowing - can be good, but we don´t want our pilot to learn by experiental learning...
2. Presentational knowing - this we did!
3. Propositional learning - secondary knowing and learning. Someone else, a book for example,  tolds you something new.
4. Practical knowing - doing things that make a difference. How do we begin to act sustainably on our planet?

3.6.2013 Lochan Uaine

The green lochan on our way to Ryvoan

The fairies were washing their clothes here and the water got green. If you don´t believe this,
you may think of minerals and algae...

3.6.2013 Monday Ryvoan

Cardamine - a beauty on the mountain

                                                                                       A shepherd´s cottage?

Our stalker, the mallard.

The heather was brown and dry this year.
