Scotland 2014 Duart Castle on Mull

Duart Castle on the "Dubh-Aird" (= Black Heights) is the home of the Clan Maclean. Some parts of this castle date from early middle age, but it is believed that a fortress stood here even before that.

The rowan tree keeps evil spirits away. I do like the rowan tree with its white flowers in the spring and red berries in the autumn, even though the evil spirits don´t give me much trouble...

Duart Castle is guarding the Sound of Mull and has seen peace and war, enemies - and prisoners:

A galleon of the Spanish Armada took shelter in Tobermory Bay in October 1588. Many stories are told about this. No one knows the truth, I think. But here we can see a Spanish officer in the dungeons in Duart Castle...

You can see a little rock in the sea here, can´t you?
Lachlan Cattanach got tired of his wife, placed her on the rock at low water and thought that high water would do the rest. Luckily she was rescued by some fishermen and they helped her to her brother´s home. Lachlan wrote to her father and went to his house with a coffin for a "funeral". We can imagine his dismay when his wife was sitting next to her father! He could go unharmed but was not forgiven.Later he was murdered in Edinburgh by a brother of his exwife.

The Great Glen opens.

Back to Oban with Caledonian MacBrayne, and The Red Insign shows that it is a peaceful ferry and no navy vessel...

Dunollie castle, covered with ivy, seen from the ferry. The first settlement here was in the Bronze Age and later the fortress was a shelter against the vikings from Scandinavia...
