2.6.2013 Edinburgh castle

Sir William Wallace - Braveheart - welcomes you. Maybe.

A soldier´s wife had been in winterquarter in Malplaquet, but decided to return home to Scotland. She handed her little son to his father, Private McBain, who was on parade. He fought the battle with his little son in his knapsack, having nowhere else to put him.

A mortally wounded soldier fell carrying the flag in front of the regiment at Waterloo. A sergeant tried to take it from him, but he refused to give the flag away. The sergeant took the soldier, still gripping the flag, over his shoulder. This impressed the French so much that they held fire until the two soldiers had returned from the frontline.

More peaceful:
Saint Margaret´s Chapel, the oldest building in the castle,
built by King David I (1124-53)

The fireside looks so cosy, but remindings of war were everywhere in Edinburgh Castle.
